Rain

by Richard Vince

Smiling as the rain begins to fall,
Washing away all the maybes,
I cease to hurry; after a day of
Murky complexities, the rain is
A thing of simple cleanliness,
Of pure and shining beauty.

From a dark sky the crystal brightness
Falls. I seem to be the only one
To see this irony, the only one looking
Up rather than down.

Paces quicken, umbrellas open, but
I let the rain fall on me,
Let it refresh my tired skin,
Take on some of the light it brings.

Once, the rain brought sadness, but
Now it brings me joy and a
Glowing serenity I find in nothing else.
While once it was a dirge to accompany
My darkest nights, it is now a
Hymn of joy, a choir with which
My heart joins in exultation.

My eyes marvel at the
Bejewelled world, and I hope
That I am not the only one
To see it.

I know this feeling, I know this hope! And being at a loss for how to express it, -I'm so glad that I found your Rain poem, so completely divinely delivered. Like a Hymn. Serenity —Jill

I feel the same way, and about snow too. Winter, death, endings, and yet I find the snow speaks of beginning, newness, pristine white, and birth. I love this, Richard!!!

We don't get enough rain here in SoCal, so that when it comes, most of the time I enjoy it. I even love thunder and lightning. Here, you've taken the rain and used it as an emotional cleansing experience, just as tears are. The clean aroma after a rain is a sensory experience. Your perception comes from before and after and something learned that you wish everyone else would notice, too. Isn't that the way it usually is? We discover a simple truth and want to share it with the whole world.

I feel a similar affinity with thunderstorms, though the serenity comes later :) Literally, a sensational read...
