Awakening

by Leonard M Hawkes

And so you went in the night,
Simply slept beyond our
Confined ability to rouse you;
Yes, and awakened, perhaps astonished,
To that even sweeter,
Long awaited dream.

But you always knew the way,
We spoke of it many times,
Sometimes with hushed voices
As though it were a mystery; and
More than once, you even showed me
A location among the stars--

I confess, I have shared
That covert knowledge,
High in the mountains on
Many a summer night;
Your voice still clear then
As the patterns in the sky.

Our last meeting was warm,
An embrace with eager news,
And this after so many seasons;
And ironically, among those
Very generations that bind us
Beyond our time.

And now I think of Time:
Your time, our time, my time;
And always the question and faith
Concerning the Timing--
Always reason, beyond reason.
And too, that solid assurance

That you'll be waiting now,
Beyond all earthly triviality,
Literally a friend among the Gods,
And perhaps too among those
Bright, well-ordered stars,
For that day of our final Awakening.

A very eloquent tribute, full of confidence in the great Awakening and bringing the stars closer to us.
