Dangerous Embraces

by Ken Harnisch

And what, in the end, is more dangerous?
The embrace with which I hold you now
As close as breath itself, or the words we share
That dance across the universe?
Those, fraught with meaning,
Say all and nothing.
In exhalations and inhalations
They rock and roll
And change direction on a whim,
Becoming alternately
Banal and then profound.

But it is not the sentences themselves;
Not the strings of words we ogle
With the delight of children watching Christmas lights
No, it is the weight of all
The words accumulated,
The time we spend
In manufacture of their beauty
That renders all our words
Alluring, and so much more dangerous
Than this embrace could ever be.

Yes, yes, I embrace these words. It's in the words that it all happens in that more enduring place. Yes. Tested and true... this is how I understand it... beautiful.

Yes! The alluring embrace of written words can transport the mind, tangle or untangle fretted emotions, loose a heavy weight that would take a swimmer down or cast you to the bottom of a dismal sea. The banal and profound play equal importance in continuing or discontinuing relationships. Quite a communication you've laid out here for us to feast on. I've a feeling I'll be back for seconds.

Uuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmm..... very sensual... Amazing isn't it, how a word here or there can change everything, even in an embrace? Beautifly written Ken!

Excellent POTD! This takes me far beyond the embrace v words of a relationship into what words and their cumulative weight affect on a wider stage. Quite profound.

More meaningful, and beautifully crafted each time I read this. What a pleasure, a thrill, to have this poem on our front page today. These "words accumulated" and the power and allure of them. In my favorites.
