30th St. Station

by Amanda Conlogue

one more kiss tonight,
please, before you walk out
onto the platform, tracks
running distance between us

we tell ourselves we grow
strong from this, enduring the pitch
steel wheels traversing steel rails
their intermitent come and go
but the times between connections
are the sweetest of hours

you've always known I can't
get enough of your tender mouth
and draw your breath into my lungs
as if I could breathe you in
keep a part of you with me

always, but I have to exhale
take a new breath from the air
between us that widens
as you board the train
