children by Corey Lockabychildren marched
through the town
into the forest
over beaches and mountains
through the arch of mankind,
into darkness
i'm alone in my coating
peeling like snakes
sleeping unaware
the sounds i hear are tired
they have a bit of a wheeze
these days
everything starts to take on
the sheen of corroded metal
where the alkaline has bitten very slowly
released into the air
and i try not to sleep it off anymore
i try not to miss my life going by.
they came to a place in the darkness
warmer, they saw a light
candle flame
and having spent such a time in the darkness
they were bewildered
unknowing of such a blessing
they could see each others' faces
and they were afraid
they extinguished the flame
first unwilling,
final understanding,
total darkness for our vicarious future. 05/19/2007 Posted on 05/19/2007 Copyright © 2024 Corey Lockaby

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 05/19/07 at 02:39 PM This is a fascinating downer. I like "through the arches of mankind". Very interesting that you would use children as the eyes in the dark, then seeing the light in bewilderment, and returning to the dark. There is almost a mythological sci-fi feel to this - adults absent, much left unsaid. I like it, depressing as it could be. I'm very curious about the "vicarious future", and wonder who is living through whom. Thanks for the questions. |
