Upon waking from the dream (revised)

by Sandy M. Humphrey

I have been chain-smoking clouds of your inadequate attention
bodysurfing waves of our disillusioned dreams
waking to the sober writer's voice until the whispers start to SCREAM
Reminding me I can only lose my way along the path of our relationship
if I look into the windows of your eyes and no longer recognize
the reflection of myself staring back at me

I have spent so much time trampling through the jungle of my emotions
wrapped up in the vines that askew the path
as I wade through the brush of feelings trying to find
You or I or we
the words I speak are Love and Caring and Honesty
yet are they the mask for fear and resentment and jealousy

Every time I break free and start to finally see
Who it is I truly think I am
I slip and start to slide back into the dense confusion
if I catch myself and get my footing I can remember
to stay on my own path for that is Progress
and today that is all I wish to make

The imagery that this evokes is outstanding.....

Thought provoking piece Sandy; saw much of myself here. Quite the finale in that third stanza.
