Snidley Whiplash*

that my eyebrow
is raised
you assign me
a name unaccustomed
I assure you my 'stache
is not waxing mean
I declare
my top hat's
not a cover
you've painted me black
and I must sneer at that
you've devalued my fame
you've re-lettered my name
I'm told that my smile
hides a bit
of a hiss
that the track you're on
is where I've tied you
I'd throw you a rope
but you're already
hung up on
sending me
under the cutter
you've painted me black
and I'm taken aback
a hysterical turn
of events I've not earned
I'd scream
out in pain
but it's you in distress
and the knots are
not mine, but yours - twisting
this cloak that you've
wrapped me in
(dare I say drama?)
disguises some
rats, foiled again!
you've painted me black
yet I've planned no attack
there's no map with an x
no bombs, no pretense
I'd sneak
from the scene
of this unseemly
crime that you're
bent on revealing
as mine
but I've never been
good at a tip-toed
retreat
and I've just
got to see
how this ends
you've painted me black
yet the red's on my back
from the lashings you've laid
for some rent I've not paid
and I'd laugh if it weren't
such a cartoon of words
now your culprit's been sacked
and you've painted me black
