Ode to a Wrong Number

by Maria Francesca

Please don't hang up.
I don't know what number I dialed.
If you cut me off
I can't call you back again.

But please don't hang up.
You don't have to say anything -
just maybe make listening noises into the phone.
If you want,
you can lay the handset on the table
and walk away.

Just please don't hang up
because I'm all alone here
with the lights out
and the darkness is getting bigger
and the sound of the dial tone
may break my eardrums.

So please don't hang up.

Clever, interesting take on aloneness and loneliness by focusing on the ultimate tool of communication and togetherness. Well done!
