Karaoke Bar Superstar

by Frank Lee

For three minutes
he is a superstar.

Waited all week for this moment,
practicing in his mirror,
memorizing the rhythm,
working on the pitch.

He stares out at the crowd,
not recognizing a single face,
losing himself in the music,
prancing in front of the microphone like a ballerina.

Ignoring all the hecklers,
not stumbling over any words,
fist-pumping and air-guitarring,
nothing or no one could stop him now.

The music stops,
a few strangers awkwardly clap,
he bows, and leaves the bar.

Goes home to his family like nothing ever happened,
takes a shower and tells himself he did it,
again.

He was a superstar,
for three minutes.
