songs about mud

by Emily Tong

If I could, I would
untangle every coiled phone cord
and free the mothers so hopefully imprisoned.
I would ride to the top of every elavator
press all the buttons on the way down
and up
and actually talk through the drowning elevator music
to the stuffy people then full of impatient
and drowning drowning in the elevator..
I would sing along to
every song that I knew that plays wherever I went
and make up words to the songs I don't know.
I would push the swings of all the forgotten 5 year olds
and tie their shoelaces that are dragging in the mud.
I would let the old ladies teach me to knit
and the old men tell me what happened back in the day.
I would sleep in a hammock every night on the porch
singing lullabies to the stars
and all the neighbors that can hear me.
If I could, I would
walk in the puddled streets when it rained
adn save all the worms from drowning.
