breathe, it serves the world

by Jared Fladeland

where does the breath go?
each day, i send a thousand children off to fight
the battle between molecules:
dust particles, vapors, chemicals, and, oh yes,
that whole air known as oxygen.

i regret the exhalation in every moment
because I want to hold the world in.
i am selfish enough to dream my lungs
can keep every face in small cupboards
made of pink organic tissue.

the epitome of holding on for far too long.

I really liked this one, Jared. I like the idea you put forward regarding the necessity of breath vs human selfishness. Great work :) Kat.

Jared, I remember your work well but somehow I missed this one...and I am glad it got POTD so I could re-familiarize myself!!! I absolutely love the imagery you create here -it is lush and tangible and visceral and humid -brilliant piece of craftsmanship and deserving of POTD!!!

I too missed this along the way and I fear far more things I shouldn't have. Congratulations on POTD. A very fine write.

I'm sitting here examining my breathing, reading this fine POTD! "i am selfish enough to dream my lungs can keep every face in small cupboards made of pink organic tissue" - loved these lines especially.
