Regrets

by Genevieve Sturrock

the past is a siren's song
full of regret
calling me
beckoning me
reminding me
of all that was and is now gone

it's tempting me to wallow
in the memory of
your passion
my desires
our hopes
and the sorrow is too much to swallow

i rage at all that was lost
the mournful ghosts of
i could have
you should have
we would have
and our future was the cost

Author's Note: to realize that what once was...was real...disturbs my knowledge of my past.

Thank you for sharing this poem. I can relate to it well, and it's wonderful. What really amazed me was your author's note, because last night in bed trying to sleep, I thought these exact words: "to realize that what once was...was real...disturbs my knowledge of my past"

Its funny, we have relationships in life, during our journey, some of them are short lived others take on hues of promise and a future. We wrap our expectations around those hopes, those promises, those rational and sane places couples go. Then suddenly - like a speck of dust dissolving into the expanse of the universe its "gone" . And all we are left with are the expectations - we had- ! This is so real and so beautiful - so true. Rhonda.

its when the past returns and haunts us and we find we weren't imagining the feelings and emotions were true, we realize we aren't over it, we just walked away from it... and we are once again faced with having to move on from something that happened so long ago!

man....love this poem....very well constructed. I felt the emotion and could identify...especially with... "the past is a siren's song full of regret calling me beckoning me reminding me" Well done!

The last stanza is absolutely lovely.

This expresses so well the hold of the past over us and how it shapes our future.

Regrets are hard pills to swallow. Sometimes we learn from them, but other times we are destined to make the same mistakes and are destined to have the same regrets. Good write- one everyone can relate to!
