cinderella.. according to trigonometry..

by Emily Tong

We all know the story of Cinderella

Who used a shoe to find her fella

But one part of the tale went unmentioned:

The prince had joined a right triangle convention

A trig activist, he knew his dream gal

Would support his passion in every detail

So he knew that Cinderella was his angel

When he saw her shoe formed a 90° angle

As he kneeled before her with a protractor,

He found that x and y angles were another factor

The clock struck 12 and off she ran,

Leaving her trigonometrically perfect shoe for her man

The slipper was carefully plucked by the prince,

Who proceeded to measure each inch

The prince took his courtiers, assistants, and horse

To search for the maid who’d left him in remorse

When the prince arrived Cinderella’s door,

Three sisters curtsied low to the floor

“This is the last house in which we’ll look

For the maiden whom, my heart, took”

The fat sister grabbed the shoe with pudgy hands

And removed her own acting regal and grand

“This shoe must have shrunk, though I can’t fathom how –

It fit at the ball and it doesn’t fit now!”

Another sister was short and thin

Her spidery fingers helped her foot in

“It must have stretched! This can’t be so...

The end is inches from my toe!

Still a third girl sat in the chair

And took the shoe that was offered there

But an angry stepmother grabbed it first

And threw it to the fire where into flames, it burst

“Cinderella, how foolish of you

You are nothing without your shoe”

The prince’s hope was shaken and he sighed

He searched each of the maiden’s eyes

Cinderella was quick to take this chance

She ran to his assistance

“That I’m the girl of your dreams, I’ll prove –

I know the measurements of the shoe”

With that, she took from her pocket a note

Upon which were the triangle measurements she wrote

But again her stepmother invaded the space

With fury she began to erase

“Enough!” cried the prince, but the damage was done

Half of the paper’s writing was gone

All that was left were 2 of the triangle’s sides

The prince again questioned if this was his bride

The other sisters saw their fortune,

They hurried to scribble random measurements down

“The shoe was truly ours!” they cried,

“Read these notes and find your true bride”

He took the 3 sets of measurements to compare

He puzzled over his own and theirs

With grief the prince put his pencil down

He could not find who deserved the crown

Now Cinderella’s fate is up to you

Discover and prove if her story is indeed true

Find the other measurements of the Prince’s triangle

Compare them to the sister’s notes to find his”angel”

Author's Note: this is hilarious! it's from a project in one of my math classes.. i then did a bunch of diagrams representing the measurements of the 3 sisters.. and of course cinderella's were correct (sigh) and they lived happily ever after
