Evelyn M. Williams

by Emily Tong

born on a Tuesday
died on a Thursday
loved to eat gingersnaps

smelled like peppermint
and old newspapers

reading glasses that hung from her neck
on a beaded string
{gray eyes behind the glass}

spindly fingers reaching out
- musician’s fingers
- - artist’s fingers
calloused , worn at the tips

she could peel an apple
in one long strip

she could dance all night long
if the music never stopped

when she spoke, she could
make people listen
or at least be quieter

wore her hair down , so
she could feel the wind
even when it turned gray, then white
she accepted the crown of old age
even when it thinned out
she accepted disease with grace
even when the few strands were gone , and
she knew her time was near
she was strong

loved others , loved in return
lived like there was no tomorrow
watched the sun rise
every day

is survived by family, many friends
and an old, gray cat

Brilliant portrait. Vivid, relentless, strong language all the way through to the end. I hope this kicked ass all over your class.
