It Was

by David Neubauer

It was cold
and the moon was red, smiling,
bleeding.

It was cold,
and I shivered in my jacket.
The lights were brilliant,
streets aglow in crimson and amber,
traffic stopped
-Emerald-
and gone.

It was empty,
everything in the world was
just my hands and the lights.

It was empty,
everything quiet.
The stars played games with the greedy
clouds, pinpricks swallowed,
only to be revived, eventually.
Is that what eternity is?

It was Autumn,
and the world would
keep spinning.

It was Autumn,
and the world kept spinning,
and now it is Winter. And
now I'm alone.

It was cold,
and it will be cold.

It was cold,
and I need Spring to come soon.

I've lost my pride,
I've lost my dignity,
I've lost my love,
I've lost my world...

Justice would be keeping all my
toes.

"It was Autumn, and the world kept spinning, and now it is Winter. And now I'm alone. It was cold, and it will be cold. It was cold, and I need Spring to come soon." perfectly describes how forlorn winter feels to me when it's cold and wet and grey outside...like today

there is so much here that i thought i wouldn't like, but you proved me wrong. i do think, however, that the poem ends with "and I need spring to come soon."

congrats on POTD, david.
