homework: assignment

by Emily Tong

i'd like to tell you
what work is. that sometimes
you should do it for your teacher, not
only yourself. that it is worth
more to them, than it is to you.

so why not? why not
go further?, change the way they
think you work.
why not?

i'd whisper this into your ear
were you not so busy
saying how little work you
accomplished (and got away with)

i'd shout it were you not
so hopelessly drowned in your
pride and intellectual arrogance.
of course you think you are smarter than
the old man
who works to teach you what
he thinks you should know.

i'd like to tell you
you're not.

Author's Note: there's this guy in my class. who always tries to do as little work as possible, when our teacher already isn't asking for much. sometimes i wish he (our teacher) would demand our focus, demand that we actually think. (perhaps he chooses to ignore what goes on behind his head. it might hurt to recognize that his class is known by all as an easy A)

This is a painfully perfect picture of what is wrong with the majority of our youth...unwillingness to work hard for the sake of the work itself. Very well written.
