the mousetrap

by Maria Francesca

He is a tiny man
in a long muscular body

a little tyrant
suspiciously peering out at the world
past shadows cast
by his own intentions

a man of great capacity
for small cruelties.

She is a woman
who waits almost anxiously
for the voice of disapproval,
the fist of retribution

a mouse
in search of a cat

and as he watches her approach
he cannot help
but smack his lips.

Wow! This packs such punch. I pray you are merely the observer and not the mouse.
