I Can't

by Kate Demeree

I would pull the strings
Tight and taunt
Keep locked and pursed
My mouth…

Long ago it seems
Words found their way
Up and out

What now…
Unease, pleasure,
Pain, desire,
Thoughts that are jumbled

If …
What if…
Given freedom again
Its reigns…

What then would emerge?

A butterfly?
Perhaps
More like a bat
Or the same old hat

Questions, feelings, hopes desires…
Wearing different guises…

The child
Shivering in the corner,
Huddled in the dark,
With hands over her eyes…
Whisper sobs…. No..
No… No… please…
Please No…
I do not want this to be…
Let it be a dream,
Let me wake…
Soon
To find it all changed…
I can’t… Please God,
I
Can’t
