growing older

by George Hoerner

growing older
past winters seem colder
fish caught were bigger
fence postholes were dug deeper

memories don't fade
they're just seen in the shade of age
faces are less clear
now seen through glasses of cheer

it seems now through the years
there were not that many tears
what today i can recall
doesn't seem very much at all

have some things been lost
or maybe just tossed
respect for knowledge
an education at college
respect for a job
the need to face the results

drugs required a prescription
the internet didn't exist
but constant news we couldn't resist
and we used to agree more
on the purpose of war

Very fine musing on the state of things, George. And one thing that cheers me ...is your good cheer...in spite of the discrepancies-- you're (in spite of it all) still looking at things as through "seen through glasses of cheer" --cheers to you for your fine poem and thoughts!

a thousand cheers to this poem George, and a thousand more for reminding me how much reminiscence means, in days when it seems you have not an inkling of life left to live, and reminiscing, not necessarily as a means of resuscitating the past or the facts of those events necessarily, but it feels good to recall, each event, in its proper context and size or completely out of proportion.

Oh, how I loved Star Valley of the 60's--colder winters and bigger fish--I've always hated fence post holes.
