"I Solemnly Swear" by Max PhineasConscience made me hold my tongue
And it stung to keep my mouth from opening,
but I don't break promises.
Conscience told me to turn away
But I stayed,
Like I promised I would.
It hurts to be abandoned,
and you've left so many times before.
And told me to forget.
I promised I never could
And you swallowed your guilt and vanished.
You're an angel on broken wings
So you won't fly forever
I'm a stranger with unspoken sins.
Conscience told me to turn away
But I stayed,
Like I promised I would.
I break dishes, bad news,
and an occasional heart.
but I don't break promises.

Posted by Kyle Anne Kish on 11/22/06 at 09:11 PM Cole, this whole poem had a feeling of untidied-up spaces and unfinished business throughout. The forces of hurt, anger, love, compassion, reactions spoke with such clarity ... and you summed it all up with your last line, " ... but I don't break promises." Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Thanks for the read. |
