I Shall Show Not, Sad Emotion by Dave FitzgeraldI shall show not, sad emotion,
It can be noose but not neck tie.
I shall hold my tears within my eyes
And endeavour not to cry.
This will not last for eternity,
As tears will flow with age,
But I shall hold my sad emotion now
And save my crying for the page. 11/17/2006

Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 12/04/06 at 05:47 PM There is a lot underneath this poem, the juxtaposition of noose and necktie is especially poignant. An unusual contrast and using them as the symbols of depression, giving up vs. a strong formality and going forward with life, and especially: what one wears and shows--is quite moving. Especially with the similar shapes of the two things. The almost contradictory statement of saving "my crying for the page" is moving as well-- as this is a public act as well--in the sharing, and yet feels most intimate in these words. Reminds me of Elizabethan songs (Dowland). |
Posted by Alisa Js on 12/09/06 at 01:46 AM Reading this one speaks to my soul of exercising discipline in those areas one may have a tendency to be weak. Realizing there will be times for that type of weakness, but in the proper season and in the proper place. Rather than give in, the persona speaks of bleeding onto parchment, the message from the soul. Excellent! Aloha to you from this side of paradise...;-) |
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 09/16/07 at 10:40 AM Dave, I hope you don't mind if I show mine sad emotion. I could cry reading this. It does pull at the dew and at the apex of my brain there is this lake, in which I dip in my cup and sip to this fine poem.. |
