MISSING THEM

by W. Mahlon Purdin

There is nothing special about Veterans Day.
It's actually not a special day at all.
Birthdays are special.
Anniversaries are special.
Mother's Day is special.
Father's Day is special.
The day we met is special
The first time we kissed
And that day we talked about
Having a baby. That was special.
But remembering war and the sacrifices
It demands, and all of its other vices,
That is not special at all.
It's just bravura, manipulative gall.
Courage comes in the dark places.
No bands playing. Ashen faces.

I have friends listed on that Wall.

Nicely put.

Respectfully, my father and uncles who served in WWII would disagree.

If only, in remembering the losses, the "powers" that be would also remember the causes of them, and strive harder to avoid more of the same. You have penned a very powerful, moving piece here, not the typical patriotica that is so prevalent at this time of year. This, I salute.

Very nice, W. I have a friend in my writing group who was in Vietnam & I think he would totally agree with you. I tend to lean toward the "support the troops & remember the vets" rather than the "support the war" factions.

Great write. I know a few on that wall too. I don't like the wars either. I do support our troops. But, if we don't fight, they will come here again. Remember 911?

That's 9/11
