breathe

by Emily Tong

is it always so hard to breathe when you’re
standing on the edge looking in? down pour
of pain deep within. my eyes betray sour
confusion, discontentment with failure.

and hardened sadness. the air is trapped, thick
with words. within my larynx they are caught
ligaments refuse to vibrate, they stick
the rushing air leaves me feeling distraught

lungs filled with frozen air once more, screaming
to stop. breathing. stop this harsh endurance
stop running, trying too hard, you’re teaming
with anxiety. in frustrated stance,

I face the crowd that never speaks to me,
that never leaves, trusting myself to breathe.

I think the title works. i don't know. know what word pops into my head when I think of the piece? (of course you don't, it was a rhetorical question): huff. I don't know why. "huff" i dunno. It gives me the sense of that big breath that's so dire

Intense, tension builds, reads like a panic attack! Symbolism strong. Title fits.
