Come Fast to Sleep by William Simpson
Come fast to sleep, as night is brushed
by feathered hemlock on the breeze;
While cares of day are swept away
beyond the reach of highest trees:
Above the cold and snow that flies
on dreams in wildest, winter skies.
Come fast to sleep, where safe we lay
together; quiet as the night,
While rhythmic, steady, breathing beats
reality with dream takes flight:
And senseless, careless thought runs by
and chases cloud, and butterfly.
Come fast to sleep with me, I pray
and wake thou not till dreams are spun,
and breath of night exhausts and stills;
cool morning light suggests the sun:
Then stir, and wake again, and rise;
and share our dreams through morning eyes.
