cancer ward

by Peter Humphreys

early morning
silence still
deeply ill
couples whisper
people stare
blankly into
space no longer
there as nurses
and doctors go
their busy warm
distant way I
say how can this
be so many why mes
remain unanswered in
the shallow morn as
on her bed a young
woman perches her life
before her over yet
not begun and as the
milky white grey sun
greens the distant
hills a call comes
for tea and toast
we all awaken and say
yes please yes and
on the windowsill a
bird perches wings
set for distant flight

Bold subject matter intelligently and poetically presented. Poets should make readers look and see, and you do.

Although I think L10 would be more effective without the word 'warm,' on the whole I found this piece to be quite good in its expression of subject. I especially like the double use of the word 'distant,' and how the bird in the second last line reflects the cancer patient in metaphor.
