The Biggest Price You Could Pay

by Rebecca Lin

I don’t want to be a number
on a piece of paper,
part of a statistic;
One out of the 1 million people
dying, disintegrating each day…
hopelessly, ultimately.

And whether or not
huge epidemics will wipe out
this world
(or maybe we’ll all just kill ourselves),
experts say
something will get us,
either way.

I do not want to die young.
I do not want to be old.
I’m afraid of what the future will hold.

All I know is that there’s
reason.
There’s gotta be a reason
for everything…
some things…
hopefully at least one thing:

With all the pain and suffering,
there’s still joy, hope, desire.
I know life is random,
but there’s also balance.
And I believe, truly,
that we will not
always live in darkness
stumbling in sadness,
crying in chasms
ruining our rapture.

We won’t wither away
in the end…
we will burst,
we will fly
into a new time.

You do not have to be
a man killed on a plane,
a red dot on a map,
that girl next door who went insane.

You can try to do
as much as you can
and be who you want to be.
Or you could settle being
a number on a page
in a book
no one will read.

Well, having made it 41 years on this spinning ball of mud, I can say that grandchildren are worth facing the fears of aging. My goals and hopes are kind of small compared to some ambitions. I hope to leave here having given my children and grandchildren all of the love they so deserve. The little patter of tiny feet down the hall and a scratch at the door in the mornings before I've even caught a whiff of coffee brewing... to whisper "Ahna?" and a tiny little angelic pudge with cheeks made just for kissin, blue eyes radiating joy at seeing my wild haired condition...running with arms wide open into me so hard he knocks my barely awake self over.. this is life!.. to me.. this is joy. I enjoyed this. Fresh reason for another thankful inventory. Thanks for sharing.

This is one of your greatest poems ever!!! I love the message. The alliteration at the end of the fifth stanza is magnificent! Beautiful!
