Our Season Arrives Again

by Sandy M. Humphrey

As the wind subtly changes bringing a cooling from the north
I notice a change as well
The same chill that used to electrify the air
With a sense of expectation
The unknown that drew me to you
One October Friday night under the glare
Of stadium lights as the crowd around us cheered

Now it is a feeling of trepidation
An unknown that draws me to you
And away again as I can not bear the glare
Of absence of feeling showing in your eyes
Underneath the stadium lights as the crowds
Around us cheer for a different reason

What has happened to our season?
This should be our time to reflect nostalgic
With loving smiles knowing all the while
It may not be easy but we made it through
Good and bad, sick and sin
I always thought in the end we’d see
In each other the best time we had ever had

Our season is coming just around the corner
As the leaves turn and dangle until almost
Reluctantly they finally drift slowly to ground
Dancing sometimes gracefully in a whirl of color
In rays of autumn sun as if to celebrate the life
They had while adorning trees of green
Let us dance in all our shades of emotion

Celebrating the life we have had and the years
We deserve to experience the joy for having
Survived the pain and hurt often caused by two
Who come together so young and grow up and apart
In a time when the world spins faster than their youth
Promises get lost among the truth of reality
Yet love it can last if only two hearts allow
The celebration to overcome the struggle and try again

A beautiful thoughtful poem set in my favourite season as well. Superb slice of introspection, filled with hope. Kudos for the great read Sandy!
