Wanting one day to be so sweet...

by Meredith C Hartwell

Last night
I dreamed you a child
(yet still not mine)
and I wanted to tell you a story
but you cannot read in dreams
so I stuttered and fumbled
showing you colored pictures
in hopes you might understand
But you grew up behind my back --
started reading over my shoulder --
and changed the ending.

You leaned in to kiss me.
I said, "Didn't you say it was over?"
You told me you never meant it
like that.
You never wanted to say
THE END.

My alarm clock reminded me:
even in my dreams, you are a liar.

Author's Note: Title borrowed from H. Farewell's "Seek Out, My Shining Star." Thanks for that, too.
