...the vows taken in Italy
guide you along the journey
of your marriage,
the same sun of the memory
warm the waiting discoveries,
same breezes of the beginning
lift the spirits over stony edges,
the same intensity of faith and friendship
strengthen you both
for the weave of the trail’s mystery
as it turns, twists, reveals
yields a little this way,
a little that, in the rise of joy
and the quest for courage,

to lead you with constancy
there and back
to the reason again for your own
two separate paths
to have met and formed one
and followed the compass of love

Author's Note: I wrote this poem for my second cousin's wedding, (he's 28, she's about the same age) which the family (including me, my sister, and my husband) celebrated near London, Ontario, this past weekend, following their actual service in Italy in late August. I printed it on creamy ivory roses bond paper, and framed it with a dedication to them, as one of their gifts.

If I ever get married, I want you to help write my wedding vows. What a beautiful present to your second cousin and his new wife. Mo, you're the best! The more I read the words, the more I love them.

I like how this draws inspiration from several different sources and directions.

You've given the newly weds a unique and very lovely poetry gift which shall hang on a wall in their home through the years.
