On This Day... (911)

by Kristi Paik

half a decade ago
we never would have thought
we would remember so well
where we were .

the terror, the tremors, the tears.

twisted metal
the bloody glass
the stench of the city
of burning flesh below
(a scent one can only smell in hell)

never had the city
overpopulated with suits
and thrill seekers had felt
so forsaken
so hollow

i have never felt
so forsaken
so hollow

On This Day
not much has changed
except
more lives lost
more cities transformed into dust
and the memories of simplicity lingering over
the ground they now call Zero.

5 years is the past
but Oh, how it still feels so
Present.

Author's Note: The stench of the city is something one who was there would only understand...if you took the train that day all you could smell was burning fuems and flesh. I never discuss this day so here is my only therapy: To my friends and family I lost, not a day goes by that i dont miss you, and not a day goes by where i wish there has been some changes since.

They're flooding the tv today with 9-11 shows & documentaries. "5 years is the past but Oh, how it still feels so Present." It does indeed seem like yesterday.

It's so important that we remember; especially those of us who lost friends/family. The images you envoked were very vivid and real. I will never forget that terrible day- I wish I could. It changed our lives forever- it robbed us of so much. Great write!
