therefore, it's art

by Jared Fladeland

a man's body no longer surges with the essence,
a discovery that won't be made until a week later.

This is not tragedy.

a man battles with cancer using every single known medical aid,
every single possible cure in the doctor's bag of tricks
and still falls.

This is not tragedy.

a man, one day, feels a pain in his lower gut.
he brushes off as a simple stomach pain.
weeks upon years later, he continues to ignore this descension in his bowels,
but he knows deep in his heart that he's being eaten from the inside out.
His belly swells with pain but he carries on.

Fifteen years later, at a ripe old age, he finally goes to get it checked out.
It's a tumor that could've been removed easily and possibly spared him fourteen years ago,
and now, it's death waiting to happen.

And he dies.

That is tragedy.

The scourge and tragedy of cancer well captured Jared. It hits pretty close to home, as my former boss who retired in 2003, had a tumor on his leg, which he ignored until it was too late. The tumor was malignant, and eventually spread throughout his body. He died in 2005, which is another tragedy as he obviously didn't have much time to enjoy his retirement.

an important point, artfully articulated. PK
