ending

by Peter Humphreys

to the right
the sky is heavy
dark and darkening
brooding mass
lightning flashes
thunder roar
pounding
we take shelter
from the storm

gutters bursting
farmyard flooding
brown straw rivulets
of freshening dung
in the hay
we find a pillow
swifts
shy darting
'bove our heads

you ask me
is this
the time
for parting
as the sky
falls down
around us

rainbow ragged
birds awakening
we rise
and stir away
our slumbers
in the yard
pools now
clearing
august
autumn
evening
