The Speed of Dark by Gregory R SchelskeElementary, my boy,
the professor said
now let these words
sink through your head.
The speed of light
as you well know
travels slower
in heavy snow.
We don't know why
and no one cares,
but light moves slower
going upstairs.
And that's not all
we've also found
that dark is louder
than quiet sound.
Then louder dark,
I had to say-
is quiet light
on a noisy day?
Yes! You've got it
the Prof'replied-
and inner-light
is dark outside.
The speed of dark
unlike light-
travels faster
through the night.
And dark by thought,
when in the light
is no longer dark
and out of sight.
So light, I asked-
when powered down
is the same as quiet
right-side down?
Not right-side down,
Professor said-
but down-side up
and inside out.
And inside out
just so you know
is outside up
when light is low.
And darkness falls
quickly here-
'cuz the air is thin
this time of year.
Dark is heavy-
And light is not-
If light weighed more
then dark could not.
And dark does not
Which he explained-
when falling up,
or in the rain.
Falling up?
I asked the Prof,
How can that be
When the light is off?
It's only off
when dark is here-
and dark is lighter
as you can hear.
To test his case
I cov'rd my eyes
I heard no sound
to my surprise
And my big ears-
I covered too
and the dark
seeped right through.
Now when in day-
my friends all doubt,
I whisper back
and turn lights out.

Posted by Angela Nuzzo on 08/27/06 at 05:08 AM This doesn't bite at all ;) I love it! I would never try to follow the "logic" of the poem, but it seems to make sense to me. I like this stanza:
"So light, I asked-
when powered down
is the same as quiet
right-side down?" |
