Benediction: Prismatic Rainbows

by Lulu Alder

I go to bed starving—
Starving for change
And not change.

The beauty of the sunsets is beginning to seem mass produced
That brilliance has faded.
And holding hands holds no more elation
Than opening a can of soup.
You’re the period for all my sentences
And the second hand on my watch.

But then there are the days when you surprise me
With a bouquet of compliments and sacrifices
More weighty than my worth.
With a laugh, you turn Tuesdays into holidays.
And it doesn’t matter that the rainbows are made with prisms
Because they still make me smile.

What drove our liking to the name of love?
Whatever moment or action or full moon created this surviving ember—
It will be enough.
It nourishes me with hope even on the bleakest nights of reservation.
You are always enough.

I think what I love most about this piece are the concrete way you describe the contrasts...your imagery feels fresh and thoughful...at first I thought stanzas 2 and 3 were my favorite fleshy pieces, so tangibly imagistic, but the 1st line in the last stanza stole my heart...such a simple thought, but I am not sure I've ever read such a thought in poetry...well done, a pleasure...peace, jewels

Excellently profound testament to love; each stanza ribbed with varying evocative new defintions to the main theme. Glad I had the opportunity to read this...and to reinforce my own beliefs.

Beautiful write. The references to familiarity, followed by the reclamation of emotion ties this piece together nicely. LOvely.
