First Lady

What would I do
without you beside me?
aimlessly wander
inside our apartment?
bumping into walls
along the way
no one there
to laugh at
or laugh with me
nobody to play
love’s silly games
How would I react
if you were to leave me?
would I have a breakdown
or simply be sad?
I might stop eating
except for the bad things
become anorexic
or gain fifty pounds
Where would I go
if you were to throw me out?
surely I’d deserve it
if it came to that
I’m not masochistic
by anyone’s standards
but can’t imagine us
ever breaking apart
Who would I be
without you beside me?
to give me confidence
that will to go on
I can conquer the world
and maybe I will someday
with you first lady
by my side
