Garden Revolt

by Tracy Ellen

Dangerous daisies, putrid purple petunias
Unnatural colors in a brown, dying garden
Unbelievably red petals, manmade hues
Like new blood and blood beginning to harden.

Grass in patches, and the only green
Are things growing without permission
Strange hearty little plants, determined
To beat the weed killers, No remission!

Lopsided, spotty, sad little hedges
Look as though they would like to go
To a better, wetter place...plant heaven?
Do they weep, out of sight, in the moon glow?

Garden tools, a little love, and fix it up
Backhoe, a little compassion, and tear it down
Garden, what is your heartfelt desire?
What! You wish to uproot and leave this town?

Oh, garden, garden, what would you do?
“Grow riotous and unruly without you!”
