14. fireworks

by Peter Humphreys

after making
love
we slip
out
on to the
terrace
the sky
is
glooming bright
your breasts
cool
my face
burning
our hearts
aglow
time running
out
across the
Tiber
fireworks
one by one
shoot
canonades
of green
red and
white
into the
Roman sky

is this
how this
story ends?

is this
how our
story ends?

Et tu bruté? Well done Peter, taking us back to Roman times, reminding me of a line from the movie Patton, which supposedly came from a Roman servant: "All glory is fleeting."

...when in Rome, eh? Who would want this to ever end? Great images, Peter.

Great images, great poem. I agree with everyone. This sounds like how it begins. Wonderful job!
