10. fountain by Peter Humphreysdarkly
darkly
trees
arise
the fountain
plays
its tune
I look
to you
and you
to me
a moment
not
too soon
across
the city
people
walk
the walk
they walk
for years
as Rome
beds down
its crazy
flock
and wipes
away
its tears.

Posted by Angela Nuzzo on 09/01/07 at 07:28 AM I would LOVE to know how you do that, Peter. I tried to read this against the rhythm, but it's impossible. The words fit so well together, they create the tune. Excellent! :) |

Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 09/01/07 at 09:11 PM I love the image-link of "fountain"-"tears" -- beginning to end. I love the repetition of "darkly", it achieves so much, as the night falls, the progression, and also suggesting the meanings of the word dark to emerge--such richness. I know that feeling of trees arinsing at this time. It is a special view--they seem to rise up as if never seen before. Bringing this to Rome--where fountain-spray ongoing simgs... the specific is moving, and bespeaks the universal here.."to you and you". |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 09/07/07 at 06:37 PM This flows like the ink of a fountain pen. Thought provoking read Peter. Would make a great opening poem to a novel or short story. |
