He's gone before he's gone
It's a story old as time itself
Hastily carved on the back
Of some long-lost stone tablets
Buried in the Garden
With Adam and Eve...
And now us
Then, we were smiles
And laughs and sharing
We were sweetness and kindness and fun
We were together and it felt good
Now we are a trainwreck
Just two separate hearts
Beating alone and breaking even
Then I was a girlfriend
Now I'm just a girl
Wading in sadness at high tide
After such a short-lived rapture
I wasn't in love
But I sure was loving it
The way your arms stayed wrapped around me tight
The way your lips were never too far
And spoke to me in the sweetest tongue
Until those butterflies morphed
Into knots in my stomach
But a woman is the kind of fool
You never really fool at all
She'll only fool herself
Until the truth catches up
And tears the blinders off
Even as that storm
Starts brewing in his eyes
The sun shines on in hers
It's not until the lightning crashes
And the heavens weep for her
That it all becomes so clear
Even though, suddenly, nothing makes sense
But when the bliss is as fleeting
As the storm that washed it all away
It's easier to just sit back
And smile when the dust has settled
Knowing that we gave it our all
