god didn't like us today by Vere MantratriadI.
my tendencies tend to get me nowhere
faster than your feelings fleet to nothing
II.
arms can't hold what's only there in spirit
spirit can't hold what arms have taken away
III.
my only comfort
lost now, not to wind nor rain
but my need to know
IV.
cigarettes give light
illumination cradled
no power is here
not from electricity
nor heavenly intervention
V.
when the lights went out
we did not stir, we only
whispered our prayers
VI.
they're starting to find bodies
won't anyone find me? 06/13/2006 Author's Note: Written, by flashlight, in the weeks after Katrina hit while we still had no power unless the generator had $5.00 a gallon gas in it.

Posted by Richard D Frederick on 06/17/06 at 02:50 AM belief shaking as much as life itself is, i enjoyed this, esp. the separation of the stanzas, so much that each one is a small poem. V is my favorite and stands out individually to me. great. |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 06/17/06 at 12:49 PM At first I thought this heralded the end of a romantic relationship, but after reading the Author's Note I see how it also applies to hurricane. Well done! |
Posted by Christel Crews on 06/19/06 at 03:04 AM ok, so stanza II. is so incredible.. that one made me stop and think and ponder and think some more.. very well written |
Posted by Junemarie Roldan on 06/28/06 at 10:36 PM I too thought this was about a relationship, when I realized it wasn't, I read it again. It was devastating. When I finished VI. I wept. |
