If These Paths Collided

by Christel Crews

And if these paths collided

We might speak of many things
Masters of small talk are we
I'd inquire after your family
You, my career

And we would sip our coffee
Mixed with insecurity

Maybe you would ask
If you caused this cynicism
And I might reply
You were the final coating

The finishing stones
of this cold wall

And finally, I would rise
Unable to sit another moment
Confronted by
The one who got away

And we would rise
Quickly I would turn away
For you to not see the tears
beginning to finish falling

Or perhaps you'd take my hand
To stop me from retreating

And all I'd say to you
As I'd kiss you goodbye
That I will always love you
Until the day I die

Christel, this is just beautiful - sad and emotional. That guy should have both eyes blackened ;-) for leaving.

I can't tell you how often I've thought about these kinds of moments. I love the strength that forces its way through this. These little things can be so huge.

Beautiful substance, romantically woven!

Breathtaking. I find that deep inside I still have feelings for girls I dated in the past. Sometimes it never goes away. My wife knows and it's not like I sit here and dwell on it. We all have fragments of former loves. I was reading Tuesdays with Morrie and he said the same thing. Just because you're older doesn't mean those feelings are gone. So the statement in your final stanza will probably remain true.

Worthy twist to the "dream lover" concept!
