HUITZILPOCHTLI (blue hummingbird on left foot)

by Julie Adams

          He hums her noble name
          Into the wind, sky
          Blue as the day
          He was born, before
          The clouds rolled in
His mother, Coatlicue, gave birth
Unto a hummingbird, Aztec blue
Into life he sprang, fully armed
The world was not ready. His family
Zeal killed Moon and Stars, kin
In revenge for her death—
Love of a mother! Power
Plays with sunlight beams, like swords
Or red blades of mourning. Come morning, he
Clutches a serpent
His blue talons find the nearest cactus
To perch on, his
Left foot, impenetrable
In defiance!

Author's Note:

I allowed his unusual name to dictate the poem and where it would lead each line...I fell across his name in a book on gods...
Enjoy!

I'm likin' this. Wonderful sense of fable. Nice italicisation of 'mother'.
