No-Shows

by Maureen Glaude

If they held a war
and nobody came *
that might be poetry

if the annual mid-winter
group dive by humans
into PerthÂ’s icy Tay River
were scheduled again
and no-one took up the call
that might be sanity

but when a reading
by six established poets
is hosted at the public library
of our capital city
to celebrate National Poetry Month
and one lone audience member
shows up
what might that be called ?

Author's Note: *after the title of the old movie "Suppose They Gave A War and Nobody Came," which was named after an anti Viet Nam war button.

Sorry to hear about that. Another in a string of endless examples it seems of Ottawa's fickle writing community. On an alternate date, mixed with various factors...weather, location, competing events, etc., it may have been standing room only.
