On Holiday by Leslie Ann EisenbergMy mother is standing away
Away, because she was inside when I ran,
ran to the edge of the field
sun bright sailing down in streams of gold
Before I bleed, mother is standing away,
Away when my arms stretch, stretch out to catch
The glory of the dare
The taller ones
The promise
Holding smiles behind
My mother is standing away
Away, a drink of coffee when it falls
Away when it splits me to solitary sight
Away when it splits, splits me open
and then closed
My mother is standing away, away
when the red, red stains her dress,
spattered dress, spots red and round
My mother is standing away,
Away when the yellow dress walks
onto a plane back home. Home,
where dresses are washed in hot
piped water, and churn, churn, churned
until they are clean

Posted by Julie Adams on 05/08/06 at 05:33 PM Leslie, this piece is wonderful to read and to hear, I had to read it aloud the 2nd time around, and just love how the words reverberate on the page, pulling the reader into your waxing and waning tide...esp liked: "sun bright sailing down in streams of gold" AND "spattered dress, spots red and round"...the fresh imagery really belies the title...a lovely, if melancholy tone with moving poetic ability...thanks for sharing this...it begs to be read again...peace n love, *jewels* |
