the smell of summer

by Emily Davidson

the smell of summer
creeps through the back of the house
between the wires in the screen door
and graces the kitchen with a soft breeze
and that is when
i remember

last summer

and it is painful

but i think of
our bare feet and warm hands
your sun-kissed skin
wet bathing suits
a slow kiss
misquito bites
your perfect mouth
the delicate sweat

i don't want the summer to come
because this time i don't have you

but the scent is unstoppable so
i breathe it in,
remember you,
and breathe it out.
