My FINAL Cigarette

by Joan Serratelli

Today I smoked
my last cigarette
and thought
this is my last cigarette
may it last forever...
but it didn't

Tomorrow when I awake
no cigarettes for me
I can't fathom
that I've really done it
and now I'm ciggie free

I wonder if I'll remember
not to light that ciggie up
I've been doing it so long
It's become second nature to me

Yes, tomorrow will be
the first day without
my beloved cigarettes
anyone willing to take a bet
that I can remain cigarette free?

Author's Note: I finished my last cigarette about an hour ago....I miss 'em already! Do you think I could have just one more to celebrate....Nah....that would be silly.

Congratulations, Joan. After 25 years of smoking I finally had my last one 3 years ago. Of course, I had a little chemical help with Zyban.

How's it going today? Yes…write a loooong stick poem! A friend of mine used dill pickle juice sips - said it repells the taste for much anything smoky. :)

Reminds me much of myself as off and on I continue to puff away. I've learned the hard way not to say or think I'm quitting, but rather, taking a break. The longer I can go the better, and if I break down, oh well, no point hitting myself over the head about it. At least I had the break, and will try again later. Sincerely good luck! It's never easy.

Kudos to you Joan. I smoke 3 to 3 1/2 packs a day right now. It used to be 5 packs, so I guess that's an improvement. Still have a long way to go though. Kudos also on this inspiring saga of how you stopped killing yourself.

Joan, this title drew me in, because March 10 was 20 years since I'd had a cigarette. The smell of cig smoke, the thought of lighting one up - it's totally disgusting. I hope you're still smoke-free. If you are, congratulations.
