Grand Rabbit's Spring Day

by Mary Ellen Smith

One spring just after rain showers

Grand Rabbit took a walk.

The birdies sang a song to her

And so she stopped to talk.

They chirped and chirped most happily

Of springtime blooms and sprigs

She gave to them some twine and thread

To add to their nest of twigs.

She hopped a little down the path

Past old man groundhog’s house.

She waved hello to Polly Possum

And busy Mrs. Mouse.

Around the bend near to the pond

She stopped to rest her feet,

Chatting with the turtle kids

And their funny Uncle Pete.

She rested in the shade there

The turtles on her lap.

And she and Uncle Pete conversed

While the turtles had a nap.

And so she lingered there a while

Till the turtle kids awoke

And thanked them for their company

There underneath the oak.

She moseyed down the pond path

Content to take her time

Along the way she picked some blooms

And a little wild thyme.

She came across some blueberries

To make into a jam

And waved hello to the beavers

Who were busy with their dam.

Some butterflies came near to her

And kissed her on her cheek

One she recognized from home,

A caterpillar last week.

The breeze was filled with flowers

As it fluttered through her hair

And Grand Rabbit just smiled

As she breathed the springtime air.

Her gate squeaked “happy home” to her

As she entered to her yard

And in the garden gathered she

Some large green leafs of chard.

Her grandbunny’s would be over soon

And hungry they would be

For simmered chard, some carrot cake

And sugared wild thyme tea.

So busy in her kitchen

She hummed a little song

And heard the patter of rabbit feet

Before so very long.

With bunny hugs and kisses

She greeted each and every hare

And they ate their dinner hungrily

After a bunny prayer.

I would have loved to have been able to read this to my nephew when he was a little boy. This is so enjoyable.
