The Pretender

by Joan Serratelli

I don't understand
what's become of me
When I look in the mirror.
I see someone who
resembles me

But somewhere along the line
I seem to have lost
the person who I
used to be

I've been replaced
by a person
I don't know or want
to know

The real me is lost
somewhere admist the ruins
I've created
in my mind

The person who I've become
she's not the one I was
She's a mere pretender
of the person who used
to be me

This is a really important message. I also think it is important not to feel too downhearted when I look in my mirror, because there is still a teenager trying to get out!

Yes, it's so easy to get lost within when we can't reconcile our external world with our internal world, and when the past dictates the understanding of who we are, or want to be, now. Essence always remains the same, though our perceptions change...if only WE could change our perception instead of the perception changing US. I see the pain and despair in this poignant piece and empathize.

Simple, straight forward expression that speaks volumes. "Oh what a tangled web we weave." :o)

Congratulations on POTD! Top Ten? Lady, you are THE POEM for May Day. When I read this piece I felt so connected to you through a shared experience. So often when I start to shave I wonder who is that man looking back at me? What did he do with Karl?

When talking about the stages of life this should be added... looking in the mirror and thinking "who the hell is that?" This poem works on different levels and it's excellently done... Ta
