Juan’s Roses

by Maureen Glaude

yes, your surprise gift of this rosebush
carried in its burlap to my reading
should winter well again
bundled up as promised
now outliving you

Juan had been asking about it recently, as he often did, since my husband and I planted it here. Juan had a devoted passion for roses, and after I performed at the latin reading one evening, presented me this on-stage. I took several photos including the ones above and gave the copies to him, for whenever he missed the blooms.

I can almost smell the blooms, what a wonderful thing gifts are... They live forever in our hearts. Beautiful tribute to the giver is your poem.... which also speaks well of the reciever!

Both sweet and sad. Fitting capture in photography and words. I hadn`t fully realized Juan`s affinity for roses until Lynne brought a few for the mantle at his memorial.
