ONE SMALL SEED

by Rosie J Buhrmester

Our lives are but God's gardens
With the seeds of life to sow;
And how we choose to tend it
Is the reflection of our soul.

My garden has been landscaped
By strong and nurturing hands;
My seeds have all been scattered
In the soil of hopes and plans.

I did not fence my garden in
But let it spread and thrive;
For the beauty of a garden's meant
To be shared by other's eyes.

The pathway through my garden winds
With many twists and bends;
And lined with seeds of kindness shows
They're ones I'd carefully tend.

For the seeds of kindness and of love
Are the easiest ones to grow;
Just sprinkle them with tenderness –
They'll re-seed themselves, you know.

Sowing the seeds of knowledge,
It was my calling I realized;
So diligently ever nurturing,
Growing strong and healthy minds.

All gardeners need a time to rest,
To reflect in times serene;
I found a way to accomplish both
On a course of sprawling greens.

Now the gardener's hands have wearied,
Having tended his garden's needs;
But nothing fulfilled this gardener more
Than to grow a family tree.

A tree with five strong branches
Reaching higher than the moon,
Have spread the seeds for the gardener
Sending forth their fertile bloom.

And when meeting the Master Gardener
I'll give thanks for all I received,
For my life which began in His garden,
And what grew from one small seed.

Author's Note: This was written for my father-in-law, Paul L. Buhrmester, who loved gardening. He died 02/14/06 just 6 days short of his 92nd birthday. He had wanted me to write him a poem and would remind me of it periodically during the past four years; but I could never find the right words until 02/10/06. Tears ran down his cheeks as I held his hand and read it to him; and he was able to thank me. He died four days later; but not before planting one last seed which finally made his garden complete!

This is poetry at it's finest. Moving and descriptive, most excellent tribute to a blessed human being. Wish he could have lived to know he was a Poem of the Day!
